Metro of Barcelona is the faster and cheaper option for travelling around the city.

The metro timetables are:

  • From Sundays to Thursdays: 05:00 am to 24:00 pm
  • Fridays the time will be extended till 02:00 am
  • Saturdays and some holidays the service is available 24 hours

Bus service 

It’s not the faster option, but still very good to get to a lot of places.

The bus service timetables are depending on the number of the line but most of them start at 04:25 am till 23:00 pm.

Besides this, you can travel during the night with NIT Bus service between 22:40 pm and 06:00 am.

The trains in Barcelona are more used for longer distances (for example if you want to go to other cities in Cataluña) and many trains are connected with metro stations.

There are two main train companies in Barcelona: Renfe and FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Genralitat de Catalunya).

The train timetables are:

  • Mondays to Thursdays, Sundays and holidays: 05:00 am to 24:00 pm
  • Fridays the time will be extended till 02:00 am
  • In some holidays the service is available 24 hours

Besides this, the time will also depend on the line.


The tram in Barcelona is not really useful for tourists, since it covers only a part of the center and part of the outskirts.

Tram network has exactly 6 lines; T4, T5 and T6 are the ones going around the center of Barcelona.

The tram timetables are:

Every day between 05:00 am and 00:15 am
Fridays the time will be extended till 02:00 – 03:00 am


You can always take a taxi, but is not one of the cheapest way to travel, as you know. We should say that, compared to the Netherlands and other european cities, the Spanish taxis are not really expensive.

For this public transport you can buy different tickets depending of what you need:

  • Simple ticket: cost 2,15 euros but you are not allowed to transfer between different modes of transport. You can buy it in a normal metro machine, in the buses or “estancs”.
  • T10 travel ticket (most used by locals): you can use this ticket 10 times and transferring between different modes of transport before 1 hour and a quarter since you used it the first time. Depends of the zone you are going will have different cost:

Zone 1: 9,95 euros
Zone 2: 19,60 euros
Zone 3: 26,75 euros
Zone 4: 34,45 euros
Zone 5: 39,55 euros
Zone 6: 42,05 euros

You can buy it in a normal metro machine, in the buses information points or in ServiCaixa.

  • Day pass: you can use this card in all the public transport. When you use it, the card will be deactivated at the night of the last day. Depends of the zone you are going will have different cost.

If you purchase a pass for more days, it will not have counted the zones you are going:

You can purchase the day pass at the tourism offices in Barcelona.

  • Barcelona Card: is mostly used for tourists because it offers you a free access to 20 amusements of Barcelona, free public transport and many discounts in restaurants, monuments, etc. For example: Sagrada Familia or Camp Nou.

If you are going to be in Barcelona a maximum of 5 days you can take this card to have a complete touristic experience. You can purchase this card at the tourism offices in Barcelona.

  • 2 days: 20 euros
  • 3 days: 45 euros for adults / 21 euros for kids
  • 4 days: 55 euros for adults / 27 euros for kids
  • 5 days: 60 euros for adults/ 32 euros for kids
